Light Dusting and Vacuuming
Most Hunter Douglas window treatments require only light upkeep:
Dust regularly using a soft cloth or duster
Vacuum gently with the brush attachment in vertical strokes
Use compressed air or a cool-setting hair dryer for hard-to-reach places
Note: Do not use magnetic dusting mitts on room-darkening fabrics. They may damage the light-dimming backing.
Spot Cleaning and Product-Specific Cautions
Some products may allow spot cleaning using a mild, non-abrasive detergent and a clean white cloth.
Do not spot clean these products:
Alustra® Silhouette®, Pirouette®, and Vignette®
Sonnette® Aura™ Cellular Roller Shades
Products with shiny rayon or acetate cloth tapes
Note: Always confirm with your product’s care tag before using any wet cleaning methods.
Compressed Air and Hair Dryer Use
To clean delicate vanes, pleats, or sheers:
Hold the device 6–10 inches from the fabric
Blow gently using cool air only
Caution: Avoid warm or hot air — it may warp or distort delicate materials.
Vacuuming Tips
Most products can be vacuumed safely:
Use a brush attachment only
Vacuum using vertical strokes and light pressure
Do not vacuum Luminette® Sheers or Architella® Elan® fabrics
Cleaning in Between Sheers
Use compressed air or a cool hair dryer
Blow gently between the fabric layers
Never insert objects between sheers
Removing Bugs From Shades
To remove pests caught in shades:
Do not poke with sticks or tools
Use a can of compressed air or cool hair dryer to gently blow bugs out
For embedded debris, consider professional cleaning
Ultrasonic and Injection/Extraction Cleaning
Some window treatments support these professional methods:
Ultrasonic cleaning is effective for soft shades
Injection/extraction uses water and suction to deep-clean
Avoid these methods on:
Fabric-covered valances and headrails
Pirouette®, Vignette®, or delicate woven fabrics
Tip: Only hire professionals experienced with Hunter Douglas products. See: Find a Professional Cleaner for Hunter Douglas Shades
Additional Notes for Wood, Vinyl, and Fabric Tapes
Vinyl slats (Palm Beach™): Mild soap and water
Wood and faux wood slats: Dust only — do not use liquid
LiteRise® handles and plastic: Wipe with a damp cloth
Cloth tapes: Avoid water on shiny finishes — they may stain
Tip: Use lemon oil or conditioner on Heritance® hardwood slats to preserve finish.
Steam Methods for Luminette®
Want to see how it's done?
Watch this quick video to learn how to safely remove wrinkles and creases from your Luminette® Privacy Sheers using gentle steam techniques.
Steaming is a safe way to remove wrinkles and creases in Luminette® fabrics.
Steam Hand Method
Rotate vanes fully open
Dampen a white cloth with or bottled water
Place a dry cloth behind the fabric
Blot gently
Let air dry
Steam Machine Method
Rotate vanes open
Use handheld steamer on lowest setting (max 212°F / 100°C)
Hold steamer 2–3 inches from the fabric
Use slow vertical passes from top to bottom
Let air dry
Note: Do not steam woven wood shades, Provenance® fabrics, or any motorized headrail or valance.
Pirouette® Fabric Precautions
Do not apply water-repellent products like Scotchgard™ to Pirouette® fabrics.
Note: Spot cleaning, ultrasonic, and injection/extraction cleaning are not recommended for Pirouette® shades. These methods may damage or distort the fabric.
