Key Compatibility Requirements
To successfully connect a PowerView® Gen 3 Gateway to a home network, the following conditions must be met.
| Setting | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Frequency Band | 2.4 GHz recommended; 5 GHz supported; 6 GHz not supported |
| Security Type | WPA2 Personal or WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode |
| DHCP | Must be enabled |
| SSID | If hidden, the user must know the exact SSID, password, and security method |
| Network Isolation | Guest or IoT networks are acceptable only if local device communication is allowed |
Unsupported Router Configurations
PowerView® Gen 3 Gateways will silently fail to connect on networks with the following configurations:
WPA3-only security
6 GHz bands (Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7)
Open networks using OWE (Opportunistic Wireless Encryption) or other unsupported security methods
Note: Gateways can connect to routers using band steering. Splitting networks or temporarily disabling 5 GHz can help force connection to the 2.4 GHz, though 5 GHz is supported.
Common Symptoms of Incompatible Networks
| Symptom | Possible Cause |
|---|---|
| Gateway blinks green/purple indefinitely | DHCP disabled or 6 GHz-only network |
| App cannot connect to Gateway during setup | WPA3 or unsupported security; MAC filtering or blocked new devices |
| Shades appear connected but do not respond | Weak Wi-Fi signal |
Troubleshooting Tips
If the Gateway remains stuck blinking green/purple or blue, or the app cannot connect to the gateway during setup, try the following:
- Use a temporary 2.4 GHz guest network with WPA2 security for setup.
- Check the router’s security method in the router’s settings, and ensure that it is not set to WPA3-only security. Required security types are listed above.
- Check the frequency band. 6GHz bands are not compatible with the gateway network.
- Ensure your router is assigning IP addresses automatically (DHCP).
- Split SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to allow manual selection during setup. While the gateway can connect to 5 GHz bands, the 2.4 GHz band is preferred.
- Use the P-button reset instead of Forget Network if SSID credentials were changed or stored improperly during a prior setup.
- With the app open, press and hold the P button on the back of the Gateway until the light turns solid amber.
- An action sheet appears in the app with the option to Reset IP Network.
- Tap Reset Network and confirm that you want to proceed.
- The network is reset and the Gateway will blink blue/purple.
- The app then offers to set up Wi-Fi. Choose whether to set up Wi-Fi now or wait until later.
- Check if the homeowner is using MAC filtering that only allows known devices on the network. If so, they may need to allow this device onto the network.
- Some routers have other settings to block new devices until they are allowed. Check router settings or consult with an IT professional
- Check whether the internet gateway is configured to encrypt all DNS queries. The PowerView Gateway connects to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) for an internet connectivity test, so if all DNS queries are encrypted, this creates a connection problem.
