Replace Beaded Chain and Clutch
If your shade is difficult to operate or the clutch mechanism is stripped, replacing the chain and clutch may resolve the issue.
Note: This replacement is only safe for open roll shades. If your shade uses a cassette, do not attempt this repair at home, contact your original dealer.
-
Thread the replacement beaded chain back down through the housing.
- Attach the cord connector (see above for metal or plastic).
- Roll the shade up until the bottom rail touches the clutch.
-
Insert the clutch partially into the tube, confirming left-right orientation before full insertion.
Attach Universal Cord Tensioner
- Slide the cord tensioner to the bottom of the cord loop.
- Insert a small screwdriver or similar tool through the screw hole at the base.
- Move the screw hold-down tot to the indicator line to release the safety mechanism.
- Secure the tensioner at the bottom of the loop per the Universal Cord Tensioner Installation Kit.
Caution: The shade will not operate unless the cord tensioner is secured. Proper installation is critical to reduce child-strangulation risk.
Repair Service Eligibility
For shades manufactured before April 2016, the only in-home repairs are replacing the beaded chain and attaching or reattaching the Universal Cord Tensioner (UCT).
- The Alustra® Chelsea Clutch and Clutch G400 are obsolete, and shades with these components can no longer be sent in for repair.
- Clutch sizes R8 and R16 were used before 2016. R8 clutches are completely out of stock. Limited R16 clutches (for 1-1/2" tubes, in Vanilla or Black) remain available, but they cannot be ordered online and must be requested through a dealer.
Replacement brackets can be ordered online at parts.hunterdouglas.com. However, if your shade has a broken clutch, we recommend contacting your original dealer to discuss replacement options.
