Gather Tools
You may need: a flathead screwdriver, replacement parts (e.g., valance clips, tilters), and access to the headrail and shade.
Identify Blind Type
Before starting any repair, it’s important to know which type of horizontal blind you have. This article supports Parkland®, Everwood®, and Modern Precious Metals® products. Use the material and slat style to help identify yours:
Parkland® Wood Blinds: Made from real wood in natural stains or painted finishes. Slats are typically 2" or 2½". These blinds feel warm and solid to the touch.
Everwood® Faux Wood Blinds: Look similar to wood but are made from durable composite materials that resist fading and warping. Available in a range of colors and finishes with slats in 2" or 2½".
Modern Precious Metals® Mini Blinds: Made from aluminum. These blinds feel lighter and more flexible, with sleek slats in ½", 1", or 2" sizes. They’re often used in high-traffic areas or where durability is key.
Tip: If you're still unsure, check your original order or contact your Hunter Douglas dealer with a photo of your blinds.
Remove Hidden Brackets
This bracket style was used on Hunter Douglas horizontal blinds manufactured before 2004.
You can order any bracket style online at parts.hunterdouglas.com. Search "brackets" and filter by your product line to find the style that matches your shade. For the hidden bracket used before 2004, order part #KIT1303.
Raise the shade all the way up. This gives you clear access to the headrail and mounting brackets.
-
Insert a flathead screwdriver between the headrail and the bracket—on either side, not in the middle. Position the tool where the bracket meets the headrail.
Twist the screwdriver upward about 90 degrees. The headrail will snap free from the bracket.
Repeat for each bracket and support the headrail as you go. Hold the headrail steady to prevent it from falling as brackets are released.
Tip: If the bracket feels tight, reposition slightly and try again from the other side of the bracket.
Order, Install or Replace Tilters
A tilter is the part of a window blind that controls the angle of the slats. It lets you adjust how much light enters and how much privacy you have by tilting the slats open or closed—typically using a wand or cord.
You can order tilters online at parts.hunterdouglas.com, use the part number shown below. If your tilter has been discontinued or you’re unsure which version to use, contact your Hunter Douglas dealer for help identifying a compatible option.
Follow these steps to replace a wand or cord tilter inside the headrail of your horizontal blind. Instructions vary slightly depending on the tilt mechanism style.
Remove the headrail end lock from the side opposite the filter. This gives access to the tilt rod inside the headrail.
Detach the wand or cord tassels from the filter. For wand tilt: remove the wand from the metal hook. For cord tilt: untie or cut the knots holding the tassels.
Slide the tilt rod just far enough to clear the tilter. Do not slide it past the tape roll.
Spread the top of the headrail and lift the tilter out. Start from the rear side first; the tilter will come out when pulled straight up.
Install the new filter. Feed the metal arm (for wand) or cords (for cord tilt) through the headrail slot, then press the tilter into place until it clicks.
Slide the tilt rod back into the new filter. Match the rod profile with the tilter opening. Some only fit one way.
-
Reattach the wand or tassels.
For wand tilt: hook the wand into place and pull the sleeve down to lock.
For cord tilt: knot each cord and slide it into the tassel.
Note: You can order wands and tassels online at parts.hunterdouglas.com. Search and filter by your product line to find the style and color that matches your shade.

Order or Install Valance Clips
The valance is the decorative piece that covers the headrail at the top of your blind. It helps hide the hardware and creates a finished look. Valances vary by product style—wood, faux wood, and aluminum blinds may each use different shapes or sizes.
You can order valance clips online at parts.hunterdouglas.com, using the part numbers shown below. If your clip has been discontinued or you’re unsure which version to use, contact your Hunter Douglas dealer for help identifying a compatible option.
Tip: For a universal fit, order Universal Valance Clip #7007845000. This clip works with most horizontal blinds made after September 2007.
To install or reposition valance clips:
Attach two clips 2 inches from each end of the headrail. These secure the valance to the blind.
Space any additional clips evenly between the two end clips. Ensure no clips are more than 36 inches apart.
Avoid placing clips near moving parts. This ensures smooth operation of your blind.
To raise the valance height, move the clips one notch higher.
Tip: If you're unsure which valance style you have, check for a label on the back or refer to product documentation. The diagrams below show common valance profiles.

Replace Return Clips and Extrusions
Return clips and extrusion brackets connect the side returns of your valance to the main headrail, completing the framed look at the top of your blind. If your valance side pieces are loose, missing, or not sitting flush, these parts may be worn or broken and should be replaced. In most cases, you can use a universal clip to restore function, even if the original part is discontinued.
You can order return clips online at parts.hunterdouglas.com. If your clip has been discontinued, use replacement parts or the Universal Valance Corner Key #KIT4004. Compatible AWBS clips may also substitute for older extrusions.
Note: Refer to the part chart for dimensions and usage by the valance model.
Replace Tape Rolls
The tape roll is a small part inside the headrail that controls how your blind lifts and lowers. If your blind raises unevenly, feels stuck, or no longer tracks smoothly, the tape roll may need to be replaced. Many older tape roll styles have been discontinued and replaced with updated EPIC™ components. In most cases, both the tape roll and its matching support bracket must be replaced together for proper fit and function.
How to Identify the Right Part:
Check your original order or product label, if available.
Look inside the headrail for part numbers or visible differences.
Compare your setup to images of EPIC™ tape rolls and supports.
Identify whether your blind uses a bead-type or slot-type system.
Ordering Tips:
If you're upgrading to EPIC™, order both the tape roll and the support bracket.
If your blind has decorative tapes, you may need a different support—see the compatibility chart or contact support.
If you're unsure which style you have, take a photo and contact your Hunter Douglas dealer for help.
You can order select replacement parts at: parts.hunterdouglas.com.
Note: If your style is discontinued, a full component conversion may be needed. A Hunter Douglas dealer can assist with more complex repairs.

Replace Cord Connectors and Tassels
Inspect tassels, cord connectors, and safety donuts for wear or damage.
Each lift cord must be secured separately—never form a loop.
Replace missing or damaged components using approved parts.

Replace Cord Connector
Change Liftmaster Cord Loops
Caution: Do not disassemble the clutch assembly.
Remove the old cord completely from the clutch.
Place a section of the new cord into the clutch.
Pull the cord clockwise to engage the pulley.
Ensure the cord tensioner is aligned correctly.
Rotate the pulley until the cord wraps completely.
Insert the roller onto the correct pin.
Secure the clutch cover and insert the two spears.
Remove Battery Wand
Raise the fabric if possible to access the battery wand.
Reach behind the fabric and gently locate the wand.
Pull down on the wand to remove it from the bracket.
Unplug the cable from the battery wand only.
To reinstall, plug in the cable first, then slide the wand into place.
Release UltraGlide Mechanism
If the UltraGlide® wand is stuck in the raised position:
Pull the cord straight down (about ¼") to reset the mechanism.
Ensure the small silver bead is fully enclosed within the headrail.
Pull the wand at a 45° angle to resume lowering the blind.
Install or Replace Tape Buttons
Tape buttons keep lift cords secure inside the bottom rail.

Square = aluminum blinds

If missing, the blind may not lift or lower properly. Use matching replacements from help.hunterdouglas.com.
